HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss baseball team completes a five-game road swing Tuesday, April 16, when they travel to Mobile to face South Alabama in a 6:30 p.m., contest at Eddie Stanky Field.
The Golden Eagles (21-12) snapped a three-game losing streak Sunday when they put together a season-high for both home runs (4) and hits (19) in a 15-7 Conference USA victory over FIU in Miami.
The Jaguars, who enter the game with a 15-20 record, look to snap a two-game losing streak after dropping the final two contests of a Sun Belt series at Louisiana-Lafayette.
This will be the second meeting between the Golden Eagles and Jaguars this season as the two met at Pete Taylor Park earlier this month. The Golden Eagles, behind a first-inning grand slam by Bryant Bowen, jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the contest. But the visiting Jags took advantage of six Golden Eagle errors and scored 15 of the game's final 16 runs – scoring in seven different innings – to capture a 15-6 win.
Bowen continues to lead the Golden Eagle attack with a 17-game hitting streak. It is the longest for the program since Dylan Burdeaux enjoyed an 18-game streak during the 2017 campaign. The junior from Shreveport, La., leads the team in hitting at .411.
Senior first baseman Hunter Slater is next at 333, while Gabe Montenegro – who tied a career-high for hits in a game Sunday at FIU – went back over the .300 mark with a .308 average. On the strength of a 10-game hitting streak, freshman Danny Lynch holds a .295 batting average.
Junior right-handed pitcher Brant Blaylock will get the start for the Golden Eagles. It will be his first start of the year as he becomes the 10th different pitcher to get the starting nod this season. He will be pitted against junior right-hander, and Hattiesburg native, Drake Nightengale, who is 2-2 with a 5.24 ERA for the Jags this season. Nightengale played his his prep baseball at Sumrall High School.
The game can be heard on the Southern Miss Sports Network from Learfield IMG College, including the flagship stations of 96.5 FM and 97.7 FM, as well as 104.5 HD2 in the Hattiesburg area. The can also be accessed through Tune In and for free on the Southern Miss Gameday App. A paid webstream is also available through USAJaguars.com.
