Southern Miss improved to 9-9 against Charlotte, and 1-4 in C-USA play.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Lady Eagles earned their first conference win against Charlotte on Thursday night in Reed Green, and they look to put a second "W" in the conference win column Saturday night when they face Old Dominion on their home court at 4pm CT.
The Series
One of the least-played matchups for the Lady Eagles out of its conference foes, Southern Miss and Old Dominion have only met seven times. They will meet for their eighth on Saturday, the fifth game in Reed Green. The Lady Eagles lead the series 4-3, and the series is tied when played in Hattiesburg at 2-2.
Southern Miss is currently 9-9 and 1-4 in Conference USA. Old Dominion is 12-5 and 3-2 in conference play.
Head Coach Joye Lee-McNelis has been at the helm of the Lady Eagles for all seven games against the Monarchs. This is the second season for Old Dominion's head coach, Nikki McCray-Penson. She won her first game of the series last season in Reed Green, where the Monarchs over took the Lady Eagles, 74-55.
The Monarchs are led by sophomore Victoria Morris for scoring with 225 points, Ajah Wayne, a junior, in rebounds with 141, and freshman Taylor Edwards who has amassed 74 this season. Last time out, the Monarchs defeated LA Tech on the road, 70-59. Their two conference losses came against Marshall and WKU, both on the road, earlier in January.
Southern Miss continues to be led by redshirt senior Megan Brown, who hit 900 career points against Charlotte. She has 180 points this season. Kelsey Jones is back as the Lady Eagles leading rebounder, with 89. Shonte Hailes continues her reign as the leading assister with 76. Ten Lady Eagles have had at least one three pointer this season, two of which are true freshmen. Daishai Almond, Camille Anderson, Megan Brown, Imani Carter, Shonte Hailes, Allie Kennedy, Amber Landing, Respect Leaphart, Alarie Mayze and Destiny Smith have all found success at the 3-point arc at least once this season. Most notably, Brown has had 12 games with at least one 3-pointer out of the 18 total games she's played this season. Allie Kennedy is just one behind her, with 11 out of 18. Brown has also had 10 games where she has had a perfect performance at the free throw line. Not to be outdone, Shonte Hailes beat the team high of nine free throws made against Charlotte, where she was a perfect 10-for-10 at the charity stripe.
