The Lady Eagles fell to Old Dominion, 53-50.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Lady Eagles seemed to have the game in the bag after leading in both quarters in the first half, but ultimately fell to Old Dominion, 53-50 in the final minutes.
Southern Miss (9-10, 1-5) fought a feisty fight throughout the game with Old Dominion (13-5, 4-2), and dominated the game for the entire first half. The Monarchs came back from the half with a new fire, and outscored the Lady Eagles in the final two quarters, putting up 31 points. Three Lady Eagles put up two 3-pointers a piece in Megan Brown, Camille Anderson and Shonte Hailes. Brown led for a majority of the game with 10 points, but Kelsey Jones quickly caught up, scoring in the paint, and ended with 11. Southern Miss ended with a little less than 50% from the three-point line, going 6-for-13 overall.
"We controlled the game for basically two and a half quarters," said Head Coach Joye Lee-McNelis. "Then we had to fight for our life halfway through that third quarter. It truly boiled down to details. Giving up offensive boards on the free throw line - I think that was something that really hurt us, and then 3:42 to play in the fourth quarter they went to work and executed and made buckets and we did not."
At the beginning of the fourth quarter, a good jumper by Dejah Carter brought it within two, 36-34. Two good free throws by Shonte Hailes stretched the lead to four. ODU's Taylor Edwards was fouled on a good layup, and she was successful with the and-one. Alarie Mayze then made a good jumper to again put them up by three. Almost a full minute and a half went by with no score, until a turnover by the Monarchs was put in Daishai Almond's hand and she took it to the basket. After her fast break, ODU turned it over again, again was put in Almond's hand, but then a missed layup put the ball back in the hands of the Monarchs and Dejah Carter answered Almond's two. Camille Anderson dropped her second three-ball of the game, and the lead was increased by six with only five minutes to go. Victoria Morris then answered her three, and then she matched it with four minutes left. Three minutes went by with ODU on a 10-0 run, pulling ahead by four. Kelsey Jones shot two good free throws, followed by a good layup by Alarie Mayze. An ODU layup, one good free throw by Jones, then two good free throws by ODU sealed the deal, finishing three points up over the Lady Eagles.
The Monarchs out-rebounded the Lady Eagles 42 to 30, but the majority of those boards came on the defensive side for both squads. Almost all of the Southern Miss rebounds were defensive, with 24. Southern Miss had less turn overs than the Monarchs, and the Lady Eagles also finished with more steals.
