
Track and Field Set for NCAA East Preliminary

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Nineteen members of the Southern Miss men's and women's track and field teams are headed to the 2018 NCAA East Preliminary Championships in Tampa, Fla., hosted by USF for a chance to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
The East and West regions are comprised of all Division I institutions in 25 states apiece for each of the two regions. The East and West Prelim Championships will be held with parallel schedules at the two sites this weekend, May 24-26.
Athletes compete for the right to advance to the semifinal and final rounds of the NCAA Championships. The East is held in Tampa will the West is held in Sacramento. Due to weather, a revised meet schedule was released. The new times are reflected below.
Robert Watson is set to start the competition off in the hammer throw on Thursday; Watson finished seventh the event at the C-USA Championships. Freshmen Callie Jones (javelin) and Kate Mattox (1500m) are next up for the Golden Eagles, both competing at 1:30 pm ET. John Warren in the long jump, Trista Barry in the high jump and throws duo Alexis Chiles and Brashe' Wood in the shot put are all competing on Thursday on the field side.
On the track side on Thursday, sprinters Cra'vorkian Carson and McKinely West along with Keiyana Gaskin are looking to mark qualifying times in the 100m while Rian Robinson works in the 400m. Those three will then run the quarterfinals on Friday looking for a spot in the semifinals, in Eugene.
Friday, Caleb Parker gets the Golden Eagles started in the 110m hurdles while Danisha Jones competes in the women's discus. Along with the sprinters who qualify in the 100m dashes, Gaskin and West will run in the 200m dashes as well. Joining West in the 200m is senior Alexander Richemond who finished fourth at the C-USA Championship.
Nadia Maffo leads off on Saturday in the hammer throw with triple jumper, Adrianna Mitchell, not much later. The men's 4x100m relay squad hits the track around 12:30pm ET looking to continue to break records while the javelin duo, Thomas Peters and Dominic Governale hit the runway at 1:30pm ET . Kate Mattox in the 1500m, Parker in the high jump and Warren in the triple jump are all looking for Eugene qualifying marks.
Following the East Preliminary Meet the qualifiers will head to Eugene, Oregon to participate in the NCAA National Championships held June 6-9.
