Hurricane Means XC Heads to Alabama
10/11/2018 10:30:00 AM | Track & Field/Cross Country
The FSU meet has been cancelled due to hurricane Michael.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Golden Eagles cross country team will head to Birmingham, Ala. instead of Florida, as the Florida State meet has been cancelled due to the impending hurricane. Southern Miss will run in the Blazer Classic at UAB on Friday instead.
Â
The team will travel on Thursday and will race in the 6k on Friday at 9:30 a.m.
Â
Traveling will be Madeleine Bell, Monika Gebarzewska, Theresa Harto, Victoria Hoppe, Lina May, Kate Mattox, Regen McGee, Sandra Szpott and Chloe Tedder. Szpott has been a standout so far in her short time with the Golden Eagles, breaking her personal best in both meets she has competed in. This will be the first 6k race that the team has competed in, and the first collegiate 6k for freshman Lina May.

This week we go to Birmingham for the UAB meet at Montevallo. Little change up with what's going on down in Florida, Florida State has cancelled their meet and we had an opportunity to jump over to UAB. A lot of the competition that was going to be at Florida State will be at UAB. Only difference here is we're running 6k. We've had to flip the script a little bit as far as planning and it will be an interesting challenge to see how the team responds. We're coming off a really good block of training and we've been getting stronger and stronger. I'm excited to see them compete this weekend. We're going into it relatively healthy and we have an opportunity for some who have shown a lot of development these past couple of weeks to step up as our leaders.
Â
The Competition
The other teams competing in Friday's race will be Alabama, Alabama State, Birmingham Southern, Clark Atlanta, Florida A&M, Lawson State CC, Marion Military Institute, Memphis, Mercer, Nicholls State, North Alabama, Pearl River CC, Samford, Shorter, South Alabama, Talladega College, Tennessee, Tennessee Tech, Troy, Tuskegee, and the host of the meet, UAB.
Mileage
The Golden Eagles have now traveled 3,124.6 miles this season for their regular season meets.
Â
Up Next
After the meet at UAB, the Southern Miss cross country team will be heading to Boca Raton, Fla. for the Conference USA Championships.
