Fort Worth, Texas. - Redshirt junior golfer Derek Plucienski continued his record-setting fall season during the first two rounds of the UTA/Waterchase Intercollegiate, hosted by Texas-Arlington and played at the par 72, 7,304 yard Waterchase Country Club.
Plucienski opened the tournament by firing a three-under 68. He bettered himself in the second round by carding a seven-under 65. The 65 ties the third lowest round ever shot at Southern Miss, a score which he also tied in the third round of last week's Sam Hall Intercollegiate. It is also the lowest score ever shot by a Golden Eagle in the second round of a tournament. His two-round total of 133 is also a school record and puts him in a tie for the individual lead.
"(Derek's) really on a roll," said Southern Miss head coach Jerry Weeks. "He's playing as good as anybody ever has at Southern Miss. Hopefully, he will be able to continue his play tomorrow."
As a team, the Golden Eagles sit in second-place, ten shots behind team leader North Texas. The Golden Eagles opened with a 285, follows by a second round 281 for a 36-hole total of 566.
"Some holes were playing awfully difficult," said Weeks. "We had some guys struggle early on but they gutted it out. In the beginning, it was difficult. But I'm really proud of our guys and how they kept it together."
Redshirt junior Nick Brown is four-under in seventh-place after shooting a first round 71 followed by a 69. His two round total of 140 bettered his previous career low of 146, set at the 2009 Aldila Scenic Invitational.
Senior Brent Hobbs is in a tie for 23rd-place at one-over par after shooting rounds of 71 and 69. Junior John Kahlden and senior Freddie Janneck are tied in 70th-place at nine-over par.
North Texas leads the tournament at 20-under par with a 36-hole score of 556, 10-shots in front of Southern Miss. Santa Clara is in third at two-under par.
Plucienski is tied for individual lead with Texas Wesleyan's Armando Villerreal at 11-under par. Curtis Donahue of North Texas is in third at eight-under.
The tournament concludes tomorrow with the final round, with Southern Miss teeing off at 8:00 a.m.
