Golden Eagles Finish Fourth at Adams Cup of Newport

Newport, R.I. - The Southern Miss men's golf team shot a final round 302 to finish in fourth-place at the Adams Cup of Newport in Newport, R.I. The tournament is hosted by the University of Rhode Island and is being played at Newport National Golf Club.
Sophomore Rocky Cleland shot a final round 80 to finish three-over par (219) in sixth-place. Junior Alex Park fired a one-over 73 in the final round to finish in a tie for 29th-place with 226 strokes. Redshirt junior Paul Apyan finished in a tie for 32nd-place after closing with an 81.
Junior Wes Carter and redshirt freshman Freddie Janneck tied for 35th-place. Carter shot a final-round 77, while Janneck shot a career-low even-par 72.
Texas A&M's Bronson Burgoon won the individual title, shooting a three-under 69 in the final round to finish 12-under. Burgoon's teammate Andrea Pavan finished five-under for second-place.
Texas A&M also won the team competition, as they were the only squad to finish under par at eight-under. Minnesota took second-place with a final round 298 to finish five-over for the tournament. In third place was Francis Marion with 889 strokes. Southern Miss finished in fourth with 891 strokes. Furman finished in fifth-place, shooting 893. Host Rhode Island finished with 895 strokes to take sixth. Hartford finished with 901 strokes in seventh-place, and George Washington finished three shots back with 904 strokes.
New Mexico State took ninth with 905 strokes, followed by Saint Joseph's (912), Akron (914), Temple (920), Marshall (925), Connecticut (937), Navy (937) and Brown (943).
Southern Miss returns to action October 6-7 for the Memphis Intercollegiate in Memphis, Tenn.
