Pitching Fuels Doubleheader Sweep of ULM Saturday Afternoon at Pete Taylor Park

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss pitching combined for 35 strikeouts, tying a school-record in the nightcap, as the 12th-ranked Golden Eagles swept ULM in a Sun Belt Conference doubleheader, 2-1 in 11 innings, and 3-1, at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field Saturday evening.
Southern Miss (33-14 overall, 15-8 Sun Belt) swept a doubleheader for the first time since beating Lafayette twice on Feb. 15, 2025.
In the nightcap, Camden Clark fanned 15 over seven innings – season highs for both strikeouts and innings - in just his third start of the year as he limited the Warhawks (24-23, 10-13) to a run on three hits and no walks to earn the victory and improve to 6-0. Clark's strikeout total matched the most by a Golden Eagle since Tanner Hall whiffed that many against Arkansas State on April 30, 2023.
The only blemish was a solo home run surrendered to Marcus Aranda, his 12th, in the second inning as the Warhawks took a 1-0 advantage. The Golden Eagles tied the game in the third when Joey Urban knocked in Lawson Odom on a fielder's choice. A two-out RBI double from Ben Higdon in the fourth gave Southern Miss the lead for good as they added one more run in the seventh for insurance.
Higdon drew a one-out walk in that final scoring inning before stealing both second and third. He then scored on a fielder's choice that the ULM catcher dropped as he was heading home.
ULM starter Brandt Corley (2-2) suffered the loss as he allowed two runs on three hits and walked two with six strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings.
Josh Och threw the final two innings and allowed no runs on two hits with four strikeouts to earn his third save. The Golden Eagles finished with 19 strikeouts in the game, tying a school game record, which had been done three times previously.
In the opener, Matthew Russo's 11th-inning double scored Davis Gillespie to give the Golden Eagles their 40th walk-off victory since the start of the 2017 season and seventh this year.
Kyle Morrison, who drove in the team's first run with a fourth-inning home run to right for his team best 14th of the campaign, opened the inning with a walk. After being erased by Gillespie on a fielder's choice, Russo tallied his sixth game-winning RBI of his career by knocking in Gillespie.
ULM opened the scoring off Golden Eagle starter Grayden Harris, who allowed a leadoff double and two walks to load the bases in the second. The lone Warhawk run scored on a groundout, double play and then Harris got out of the jam with a strikeout.
Harris threw seven innings and gave up the lone run on five hits and three walks with nine strikeouts. Colby Allen (5-1) then hurled the final four frames and did not allow a run on one walk and one hit with seven strikeouts. The Golden Eagles ended the contest with 16 punchouts.
Adam Brodnax gave up a run over 8 2/3 innings on five hits and two walks with seven strikeouts in a quality start for the visitors, before Tyler Roark (2-2) suffered the loss by throwing the final two frames and giving up the winning run on two hits and a walk with two strikeouts
The series concludes with a 3 p.m. contest on Sunday.
