Baseball Opens Final Month of Regular Season at Home with League Foe ULM

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss baseball team starts the final month of the regular season by entertaining ULM in a weekend Sun Belt Conference series at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.

Due to expected inclement weather Friday, the schedule has been altered with the two teams now starting the series with a Saturday, May 2, doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. The series finale on Sunday has also changed to 3 p.m.

Under current head coach Christian Ostrander, the Golden Eagles are 18-1 in the regular season during May and have won the last 11 regular season games during this final month of the slate. Overall, the Golden Eagles are 26-4 in May under Ostrander, which have also included two trips to the Sun Belt Conference tournament finals and the NCAA Regional finals twice.

The Golden Eagles (31-14 overall, 13-8 Sun Belt) currently sit in second place in the league standings, tied with App State and trail leader Coastal Carolina by four games. ULM (24-21, 10-11) finds itself in a five-way tie for sixth place along with Arkansas State, Texas State, Georgia State and Marshall. Southern Miss looks for a successful series to strength their hold for second place, while the Warhawks are trying to move up the league and reach the league tournament for the first time in four seasons.

Southern Miss looks to snap a two-game losing streak after falling 7-6 at Tulane on Tuesday night in the squad's final midweek contest of the season. Southern Miss did homer three times in the game, once each from Joey Urban, Kyle Morrison and Matthew Russo.

The program has homered in 36 of 45 games as Morrison leads the way with 13, while Davis Gillespie is at 12 with Urban close behind in third with 11. It is the 10th consecutive full season (not counting 2020) that the Golden Eagles have had at least three collect double-digit homers in a season. As a team, Southern Miss has belted 62 this season as a squad.

Morrison continues to lead the Golden Eagles in hitting with a .329 batting average to go along with a team-best tying 39 RBI. Seth Smith ranks second in hitting at .320 with two homers and 22 RBI, while Gillespie ranks third at .316 with 39 RBI as well. Urban is fourth at .310 and 35 RBI. Matthew Russo adds a .287 average with nine homers and 37 RBI.

For the second-straight weekend, the Golden Eagles will use the starting rotation of left-hander Grayden Harris (7-1, 3.19 ERA), right-hander Camden Clark (5-0, 3.21 ERA) and right-hander Camden Sunstrom (3-3, 2.41 ERA).

Following the ULM series, Southern Miss travels to James Madison next weekend for its final road series of the campaign. The series starts at 5 p.m., CT Friday.
