HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Ben Higdon drove in three runs, and Camden Sunstrom threw six strong innings, as Southern Miss defeated ULM Sunday afternoon 7-3 at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field to complete a three-game Sun Belt Conference sweep.
The Golden Eagles (34-14 overall, 16-8 Sun Belt) moved into second place all by themselves in the league standings with the sweep and also recorded their 20th home victory, reaching that mark for the 11th-straight season. The win also marked the 14th consecutive regular season win in the month of May for the program.
Along with Higdon's offensive exploits, both Davis Gillespie and Matthew Russo added three hits apiece in the 12-hit Southern Miss attack and Drey Barrett drove in two runs of his own.
Southern Miss jumped out ahead off ULM starter Seaver Sheets in the third inning as they sent 10 men to the plate and scored four times, all coming with two outs. With Joey Urban on first after getting hit by a pitch, Gillespie and Russo each singled to load the bases. Barrett then knocked in the game's first run with a single before Higdon plated two more with a single of his own. The Golden Eagles finished the scoring with an RBI single from Tucker Stockman.
Meanwhile, Camden Sunstrom limited the Warhawks (24-24, 10-14) to four hits over his six innings of work with no walks and five strikeouts. The only run he allowed was a solo homer to Davis Mauzy, his third, to open the fifth. The win for Sunstrom allowed him to improve to 4-3.
The Golden Eagles completed their scoring with three more runs in the sixth. Seth Smith opened the frame with a single. After a sacrifice bunt to move him to second and he scored on a Russo single. Barrett and Higdon then followed with run-scoring singles of their own to complete the scoring tallies.
ULM added a pair of runs in the seventh to close the final gap off Kros Sivley, who was making his 97th career appearance for the program. Dayne Wray plated the first run with a groundout, before Garrett Wiethorn added a RBI single.
Sheets allowed four runs on two hits with three walks and four strikeouts over 2 2/3 innings to suffer the loss and fall to 3-2.
