Benjamin Fernandez Top-10 Finish Leads Southern Miss at Blessings Collegiate Invitational

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Benjamin Fernandez finished tied for seventh for Southern Miss at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational on Monday, closing with a six-over 78 to end the tournament at three-over 219 at Blessings Golf Club. Southern Miss took fourth place as a team.

Benjamin Fernandez birdied the par-5 fifth and par-5 10th holes, against four bogeys and an eight on the par-4 12th. He played the front nine at two-over 38 and the back nine at four-over 40. For the tournament, Fernandez led the field in par-5 scoring at 4.42, playing those holes at seven-under. He tied for second in the field with one eagle and tied for fifth with 11 birdies.

John Markow led the Golden Eagles on the day with a two-over 74, climbing four spots to tie for 27th. Markow made birdies on the par-4 sixth and par-3 17th and played the back nine at even-par 36. Franco Fernandez shot a four-over 76 and finished tied for 23rd. The freshman made four birdies, including one on the closing hole, and played the back nine at even-par 36. His 34 pars for the tournament are tied for fourth in the field.

Supakorn Amornchaichan also carded a 76, playing the front nine at even-par 36 with a birdie on the par-4 sixth, and tied for 27th. Jake Moffitt shot a 78 and finished 46th, making a birdie on the par-4 14th. Moffitt's par-3 scoring average of 3.08 is tied for fourth in the field.

Southern Miss shot 16-over on the day and finished the tournament at 40-over par. The Golden Eagles are 13 strokes behind third-place North Texas, two strokes ahead of fifth-place Kansas State and six strokes ahead of sixth-place Little Rock. UNCG shot a tournament-best seven-under in the final round to move up to second at 16-over, while host Arkansas won the team title at six-under par.

The Golden Eagles enjoy a week off before taking on the Fallen Oak Collegiate, Oct. 17-19.
