HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Southern Miss senior golfer Benjamin Fernandez (Asuncion, Paraguay) earned Sun Belt Golfer of the Month for September in an announcement by the league office Thursday afternoon.
Fernandez opened the 2026-27 season with a 69.55 scoring average through nine rounds, highlighted by a victory at the JT Poston Invitational, where he finished 17-under-par with a three-round total of 196 (67, 65, 64). His final-round 64 was a career-low and helped him claim the individual title.
He followed the win with two more top-10 finishes, placing T6th at the Badger Invitational at 5-under 211 (68, 71, 72) and T7th at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational at 3-over 219 (66, 75, 78), where he opened with a 66.
"We are so proud of Ben and the man he has become since joining our team." head coach Eddie Brescher said. "He has improved in all aspects of his game on the course."
"I am particularly proud of the way he has become more organized in the classroom and with life off the course. He comes from an amazingly talented family of golfers, and this is another fantastic accolade for his legacy at Southern Miss."
Fernandez has recorded five eagles and 42 birdies this season and has posted seven rounds of par or better. His performances helped to lead Southern Miss to a victory and two top-5 finishes.
The Golden Eagles return to action Oct. 17-19 at the Fallen Oak Collegiate, which will be played in Saucier, Miss.
