HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss used a 10-run second inning, tied a season-high with four home runs and got five quality innings from starting pitcher Grayden Harris as the No. 8 Golden Eagles defeated Sun Belt foe Georgia Southern 14-3 in seven innings Thursday night at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The Golden Eagles (38-14 overall, 20-8 Sun Belt) won for the seventh-straight game as well as earning their 18th-straight regular season victory in the month of May. The win, coupled with Coastal Carolina's 7-2 loss at Louisiana, puts the two teams tied atop the Sun Belt standings with two games left to play.
Drey Barrett led the Golden Eagles with three hits and added four RBI, along with two hits each from Seth Smith, Joey Urban, Kyle Morrison and Ben Higdon, who also drove in three runs. Barrett, Urban, Morrison and Higdon all hit homers as the Golden Eagles' four long balls as they belted that many for the second time this season.
The Golden Eagles put together their second 10-run scoring inning of the season to jump out early in the contest. Southern Miss sent 14 batters to the plate as they scored on an RBI double by Higdon, a two-run single by Ty Long, RBI singles by both Urban and Morrison, an RBI double from Davis Gillespie, before Barrett belted a grand slam, his sixth homer and the team's fifth grand slam of the year, to complete the inning's scoring.
Harris improved to 8-1 on the year as he limited the Eagles (16-38, 7-21) to an unearned run on two hits with no walks and eight strikeouts over five-plus innings to get the victory.
Southern Miss extended its lead with a two-run homer from Higdon – his fifth - in the fourth, before getting back-to-back homers from Urban and Morrison in the fifth, their 13th and 15th respectively to complete the home team's scoring.
Georgia Southern registered an unearned run in the sixth on a run-scoring groundout from Brady Christman, before getting two more runs in the seventh, one coming on a fielder's choice and the other on an RBI single to right from Grant Jordan.
Will Holder, the Georgia Southern starter, was touched for eight runs on seven hits over 1 1/3 innings with no walks and no strikeouts to suffer the loss and fall to 2-6.
The series continues Friday with a 6 p.m. contest.
