HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Eight different Southern Miss players drove in at least one run, including a game-high three from Ben Higdon, as the No. 8 Golden Eagles defeated Georgia Southern 10-1 Friday night at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field to secure its fifth consecutive league series victory.
The Golden Eagles (39-14 overall, 21-8 Sun Belt) won for the eighth-straight time as well as capturing their 19th consecutive regular season contest in the month of May. The regular season concludes with a Saturday at 1 p.m., contest between these same two teams and, with a win, Southern Miss would clinch at least a share of the Sun Belt regular season crown.
The home squad opened the scoring by registering a run in the opening inning for the 21st time this season. Seth Smith opened things with a leadoff walk, before Kyle Morrison collected a one-out double to left center to put Southern Miss on the board first.
Sean White tied the game in the second for Georgia Southern (16-39, 7-22) with his eighth home run of the year off the top of the Coke sign in Ieft field.
From then on, it was all Southern Miss as they scored in five more separate frames down the stretch to put the game away.
Solo runs were tallied in both the third and fourth frames giving the Golden Eagles the lead for good. Matthew Russo drove in the first run with a single up the middle in the third. Joey Urban then doubled home the third run in the fourth.
Southern Miss extended the lead to 5-1 in the fifth on a Drey Barrett run-scoring double, followed by an RBI groundout from Higdon.
After getting another run in the seventh from Tucker Stockman knocked with a run-scoring single, the Golden Eagles put the game out of reach with four more tallies in the eighth.
Smith opened the frame with his third homer of the year to right, before Davis Gillespie posted an RBI single and Higdon added a two-run single of his own to complete the scoring.
Golden Eagle starting pitcher Camden Clark (8-0) limited Georgia Southern to a run on five hits with no walks and nine strikeouts over five innings to capture the win. After a scoreless frame from JW Armistead in the sixth, Kros Sivley – making his 98th career appearance – only allowed a two-out double in the ninth with four strikeouts and no walks to earn his third save.
GSU starter Ethan Garrett allowed three runs on five hits with four walks and no strikeouts over 3 2/3 to suffer the loss and fall to 0-8.
Eight Golden Eagle seniors, Colby Allen, Armistead, Higdon, Morrison, Sivley, Russo, Caleb Stelly and Urban, were honored prior to the game.
