Women’s Tennis Earns First Win over Tulane in Program History

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss (8-7, 1-2 SBC) closed its home schedule with a milestone Tuesday afternoon, defeating Tulane (9-11, 0-0 AAC), 4-3, at the USM Tennis Complex for the program's first win over the Green Wave. Southern Miss entered the day 0-10 all-time against Tulane before breaking through in the series.
The Golden Eagles set the tone early by taking the doubles point. Kamornwan Kornsila and Pimmada Lim opened with a 6-1 win over Diana Badalyan and Leigh Van Zyl at No. 3 doubles, and Hannah Chambers and Miranda Xu followed with a 6-3 victory against Natalia Perez and Micah Pierce on court two. Tulane picked up a 6-4 win at No. 1, but Southern Miss carried the 1-0 lead into singles play.
Tulane answered quickly in singles, claiming straight-set wins at No. 5 and 1 to move in front 2-1. Micah Pierce defeated Kornsila, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 5, and Campbell Ricci followed with a 6-2, 6-2 result against Angelina Blinova on court one.
Southern Miss responded with three strong singles performances to turn the match back in its favor. Hannah Chambers pulled the Golden Eagles even with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) win over Leigh Van Zyl at No. 3 singles. Sakura Sudo then delivered a key point on court two, battling past Summer Chandler, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, to put Southern Miss back in front.
The clincher came from Xu at No. 4 singles. After dropping the opening set, Xu answered with a strong finish and defeated Perez, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, to seal the 4-3 team win for the Golden Eagles. The victory gave Southern Miss its first win over Tulane and capped the home finale on Senior Day.
Tuesday's match also marked the final home appearance for Blinova, who was honored before first serve. Southern Miss now turns to the final two matches of the regular season, with road trips to UAB on April 10 and Nicholls on April 12 next on the schedule.
