HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Davis Gillespie had two hits and drove in three runs to lift No. 22 Southern Miss to a 6-3 victory Saturday afternoon over Texas State, winning a Sun Belt Conference series at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
On Pete Taylor Day, the late baseball coach – who coached the program from 1959-1983 and who the park is named for - was honored prior to the game with a ceremony as well as a commemorative bobblehead giveaway. The Golden Eagles (27-12 overall, 10-7 Sun Belt) also showed their appreciation by collecting 12 hits, including four from Joey Urban, three from Drey Barrett as well as Gillespie's pair of hits.
Camden Sunstrom also limited the Bobcats (25-14, 9-8) to two runs on four hits over a career-high six innings with three walks and six strikeouts to earn the victory and improve to 3-3.
After the Golden Eagles scored the first run in the opening inning on a Gillespie run-scoring infield single with Urban scoring from second on the play, the Bobcats took their lone lead of the contest with a two-run homer by Jackson Cotton, his 12th of the year, in the second.
Southern Miss then tied the game in the bottom of the frame at 2-2. Barrett opened the inning with a double to left and then scored a batter as Ben Higdon singled in the runner from second. Southern Miss then took the lead for good in the third with another solo run.
Urban opened the third with a double to right. After a flyout that moved him to third, Urban scored on a Gillespie RBI groundout.
The score remained that way until the eighth when Gillespie opened the frame with a solo homer to left, his 10th, before Tucker Stockman added his fifth blast of the spring, a two-out, two-run shot to left, to finish the Golden Eagles' scoring.
Josh Och, who got the final out in the seventh with two Bobcats on base with a flyout, got into trouble in the ninth by walking three and allowing a run on a wild pitch for Texas State's final tally. Och did get the first two outs in the frame before Kros Sivley entered the game – his 92nd career appearance – and got a strikeout to end things. He earned his second save in the process.
Texas State starter Cade Smith (3-1) suffered the loss, allowing three runs on nine hits with no walks and two strikeouts.
Southern Miss goes after its first conference sweep with a 12 noon Sunday contest to complete the series versus the Bobcats.
