LAFAYETTE, La. – Louisiana scored in four-straight innings to upend No. 10 Southern Miss 6-5 Sunday afternoon at Russo Park and capture a Sun Belt Conference series.

The Golden Eagles (25-11 overall, 8-7 Sun Belt) lost consecutive games for the first time this season as they could not overcome eight walks and four hit batters by their pitching staff. UL improved to 21-15, 6-9.
Joey Urban and Seth Smith led the way for the Golden Eagles with three hits each in the 10-hit attack.

The Cajuns jumped out in front with three runs in the bottom of the second. UL loaded the bases before Colt Brown knocked in the game's first run with a single to right. After a double play and a pair of walks, Donovan LaSalle singled in two more to give the home squad a 3-0 advantage.

That lead did not last long as the Golden Eagles tied the score in the third with three runs of their own. Seth Smith and Joey Urban opened the frame with consecutive singles, before Kyle Morrison flew out to right moving Smith to third. Davis Gillespie then lined out to center to plate Smith for a sacrifice fly.

Ben Higdon followed with a single to the shortstop, who tried to get the runner at second base, but that throw was wild which allowed a second run to score on the play to tie the score.

The Cajuns then scored solo runs in each of the next three innings, taking advantage of two walks and a single before getting a Brown sacrifice fly to make the score 4-3 in the third. UL added its final two runs on a bases loaded walk in both the fourth and fifth innings.

Southern Miss did collect a run-scoring double from Urban in the fourth, who plated Smith from first after he singled to reach base.

Smith then hit his second homer of the year to right in the sixth for the game's final run.

Cajun reliever Parker Smith (2-3) earned the victory as he allowed a run on two hits over 2 2/3 innings. Cody Brasch then fired three shutout innings the rest of the way to earn his fifth save.

Ryan Och, the third of six Golden Eagle hurlers, suffered the loss as he allowed a run on a hit with a walk and three strikeouts to fall to 3-1.

The Golden Eagles are back in action Tuesday when they meet in-state rival Ole Miss at Trustmark Park in Pearl. Game time is set for 6 p.m., and Southern Miss will be the designated visiting team.
