HATTIESBURG, Miss. – It will be a matchup of nationally ranked teams when Southern Miss and Ole Miss makes their annual trip to Trustmark Park in Pearl, Tuesday, in a 6 p.m. contest.
Â
The Golden Eagles (25-11) rank as high at No. 17 by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and look to snap a two-game current losing streak when they meet Ole Miss. The Rebels (26-11) rank as high as No. 22 by the NCBWA after sweeping LSU at home last weekend.
Â
This game marks the 40th time Southern Miss will play at Trustmark Park since they first played Ole Miss during the 2006 campaign, a game they won 13-6 over the Rebels.
Â
Southern Miss is 20-19 all-time at the facility that also houses the Mississippi Mud Monsters, a professional team that plays in the Frontier League. Southern Miss is 9-8 all-time versus Ole Miss here, 5-8 against Mississippi State, 2-0 vs. Alabama, 1-0 vs. Tulane, ULM and Rice, 1-1 vs. Houston and 0-1 versus East Carolina and Memphis. The Golden Eagles have played at least one game there each year, except for the 2020 COVID season.
Â
In the earlier meeting between the two schools this season in Hattiesburg, Tucker Stockman collected a ninth-inning, game-winning single to lead then No. 7 Southern Miss to a 2-1 victory, March 10, at Pete Taylor Park.
Â
With the game tied at 1-1 in the bottom of the ninth, Davis Gillespie singled to open the final. After two were out, the Rebels then issued walk before gave up the game-winning hit to Stockman on a 2-2 pitch.
Â
Both starting pitchers kept each other's team off the board as Ole Miss's Taylor Rabe retired all eight hitters he faced and fanned one over 2 2/3 innings, while the Golden Eagles' Thomas Crabtree went three scoreless frames.
Â
The two teams traded the game's only other runs as each team traded home runs in the fifth. Tristan Bassetta led off the top of the inning with a shot to deep center, while Kyle Morrison tied the score for the Golden Eagles in the bottom half with a solo shot to right center to open the frame and tie the score.
Â
Junior Seth Smith enjoys the current longest hitting streak for the Golden Eagles at seven games. He is hitting .517 (15x29) over this stretch with seven runs, two doubles, a home run and five RBI.
Â
In addition, Matthew Russo has reached base in each of his last 27 games, which is the longest streak of any Golden Eagle this season, while Davis Gillespie has a 23-game streak of reaching base safely.
Â
Freshman left-hander Bruce Littleton (1-0, 1.04 ERA) is set to make his first start for the Golden Eagles against Ole Miss, while the Rebels will counter with redshirt-sophomore right-hander JP Robertson (2-1, 3.71 ERA).
Â
Following the Ole Miss contest, the Golden Eagles return home to face Texas State in a Sun Belt Conference series this weekend. The set begins with a 6 p.m. contest Friday.
