LAFAYETTE, La. – Louisiana scored eight unanswered runs Saturday afternoon to defeat No. 10 Southern Miss 8-4 at Russo Park to even the Sun Belt Conference series.
The Golden Eagles (25-10 overall, 8-6 Sun Belt) had a three-game winning streak snapped, while the Ragin' Cajuns (20-15, 5-9) saw a four-game losing streak broken.
After three scoreless frames, the Golden Eagles got on the board in the fourth. Joey Urban started things off by getting hit by a pitch with one out in the fourth. After another out, Davis Gillespie blasted his ninth home run of the year to left center on the eighth pitch he saw from Ragin' Cajun starter Andrew Herrmann to give them the early 2-0 advantage.
Hermann, though, would not allow another run until giving up a two-run homer to Kyle Morrison in the ninth, his 11th of the campaign, to throw his nation-leading third complete game in getting the victory. He improved to 4-2, allowing four runs on five hits with a walk and nine strikeouts.
Behind Herrmann, the Cajuns got their offense going in the fifth. After giving up two infield singles and hitting a batter over the first four frames, Golden Eagle starter Camden Sunstrom allowed a walk and a single to center to open the fifth. After a bunt that Sunstrom's throw to third was wide of the bag to load the bases, he walked in the first run for UL.
Southern Miss then went to the bullpen for closer Camden Clark, who got a lineout at short for the first out. Drew Markle followed by knocking in the tying run on a fielder's choice. Lee Amadee then plated the go-ahead runs with a two-run single but was thrown out trying to go to second to end the frame.
Steven Spalitta increased the Cajuns' lead one inning later with a two-run homer, his third, before Blaze Rodriguez collected an RBI double as UL scored the first earned runs off Clark this season.
UL then added one more run in the seventh on a bases-loaded double play that scored the Cajuns final run.
Sunstrom went four-plus innings and suffered the loss (2-3), allowing four unearned runs on three hits with two walks and six strikeouts.
The series deciding game takes place Sunday at 1 p.m.
