LAFAYETTE, La. – The Southern Miss baseball returns to the road for the second consecutive weekend of Sun Belt Conference play as they take on Louisiana for a three-game set starting Friday at 6 p.m., from Russo Park.
Â
The entire series can be seen via ESPN+ as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network including through SouthernMiss.com.
Â
The Golden Eagles (24-9 overall, 7-5 Sun Belt) enter the weekend having won two consecutive games and three of their last four contests. Southern Miss has won all four games that they have played in the state of Louisiana this season and currently have won their last eight contests played in the Pelican State.
Â
Louisiana (19-14, 4-8) looks to snap a three-game losing streak as they dropped a 7-6 midweek affair at Southeastern Louisiana on Wednesday after dropping the final two games at James Madison last weekend.
Â
Both teams look to improve on their league standings this weekend. The Golden Eagles currently sit tied for third with ULM, sitting just one game back of Texas State – Southern Miss' opponent next weekend – and four games back of league leader Coastal Carolina. The Ragin' Cajuns are in a four-way tie for 11th place with Georgia State, Georgia Southern and Old Dominion.
Â
Three Golden Eagles currently enjoy hitting streaks of six games or better. Joey Urban sports his longest of the season at 11 games - hitting .326 (14x43) with 15 runs, 2 2B, 2 HR and 8 RBI - over this span. Kyle Morrison is next at eight games and has hit safely in 28 of 33 games, with streaks also of 11 and eight games. Ben Higdon has batted safely in each of his last six games. He has averaged .292 during this span (7x24) with three runs, two doubles, and four RBI. Both Matthew Russo and Seth Smith each have four game hitting streaks alive.
Â
In addition, Russo has reached base in each of his last 24 games, which is the longest streak of any Golden Eagle this season.
Â
After its 3-2 win over New Orleans Tuesday night, the Golden Eagles are now 8-2 in games decided by a lone tally this season. Since the start of the 2024 campaign, the program is 28-10 in one-run games in the Christian Ostrander era and 38-16 in games deciding by one or two runs.
Â
For the third-straight weekend, Southern Miss will utilize the rotation of left-hander Grayden Harris (5-1, 3.50 ERA) and right-hander Camden Sunstrom (2-2, 2.77 ERA) over the first two games of the series. They are undecided for the third game at this juncture.
Â
Following the UL series, the Golden Eagles stay on the road to face Ole Miss in Pearl, Tuesday. Game time is 6 p.m. and Southern Miss is the designated visiting team.
