Baseball Concludes Homestand with In-State Foe Ole Miss

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss baseball team concludes a six-game homestand Tuesday when they play host to in-state foe Ole Miss in a 6 p.m. contest at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The Golden Eagles (14-2) have enjoyed a 4-1 homestand, which includes a win over Top 10 opponent Mississippi State last Tuesday and a three-game sweep over North Alabama over the weekend. In the five major polls the Golden Eagles rank as high as No. 6. The Rebels (15-2) swept Evansville at home last weekend and now hold a national ranking as high as No. 16.
The current Southern Miss record has tied them with their best 16-game start with the 1995 and 2004 squads that also opened the year with the same record. Through the first four weeks of the regular season, the Golden Eagles ranked No. 1 in the RPI by the NCAA, which eight wins over teams that are currently ranked in the Top 40. Ole Miss enters the game with a No. 8 spot in the RPI.
Center fielder Joey Urban, who has won the last two Sun Belt Player of the Week honors, leads the Golden Eagles in hitting with a .373 batting average to go along with a team-best tying five home runs and 17 RBI. He also paces the squad in walks with 15.
Kyle Morrison is next at .340 after enjoying a solid weekend against North Alabama that included two triples, two home runs and nine RBI against the Lions. For the year, Morrison also leads the team in round-trippers with five and has driven in a team-best 19 runs.
Both Davis Gillespie and Seth Smith are at .333, while Drey Barrett is batting at .279 and Matthew Russo at .262.
As a team, the Golden Eagles have belted 24 home runs in 16 games, hitting a long ball in 14 of 16 contests.
On the mound, Southern Miss has 171 strikeouts as a team and only 53 walks over 141 innings and boasts a 2.68 earned run average, which currently ranked No. 8 nationally. The bullpen is 9-0 this season with a 2.57 ERA with nine saves.
Junior right-hander Thomas Crabtree (0-1, 4.32 ERA) is expected to get the start against the Rebels.
Following the contest against Ole Miss, the Golden Eagles hit the road to open Sun Belt Conference play this Friday evening at Arkansas State. Game time for the series opener is set for 6 p.m.
