HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Tucker Stockman collected a ninth-inning, game-winning single to lead No. 7 Southern Miss to a 2-1 victory over Ole Miss Tuesday night at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
A crowd of 5,775, the fifth largest crowd in the facility's history, saw the Golden Eagles (15-2) win their fourth-straight contest. The Rebels fell to 15-3.
With the game tied at 1-1 in the bottom of the ninth, Davis Gillespie singled to open the final frame off reliever JP Robertson. After two were out, Ole Miss went to the pen for Landon Koenig. The final Rebel pitcher walked the first hitter he faced and then gave up the game-winning hit to Stockman on a 2-2 pitch.
Both starting pitchers kept each other's team off the board as Ole Miss's Taylor Rabe retired all eight hitters he faced and fanned one over 2 2/3 innings, while the Golden Eagles' Thomas Crabtree went three scoreless frames.
The two teams traded the game's only other runs as each team traded home runs in the fifth.
Tristan Bassetta led off the top of the inning with a shot to deep center for his eighth of the year, while Kyle Morrison tied the score for the Golden Eagles in the bottom half with a solo shot to right center to open the frame and tie the score. It was his team-leading sixth of the campaign.
The Rebels tried to go ahead in the ninth as they collected a hit by pitch and a walk with one out, but Southern Miss closer Camden Clark came in and got a flyout to center and a strikeout to end the threat. Clark was credited with the victory and improved to 3-0.
Robertson, the fifth of six Ole Miss pitchers, suffered the loss and fell to 2-1.
Five Golden Eagle pitchers fanned nine Rebels and allowed just one walk and one hit by pitch. The Rebels got five strikeouts from their pitching staff with three walks and two hit batters.
Stockman finished the game as the only player with two hits, as the Golden Eagles outhit the visitors 6-3.
After completing this six-game homestand, the Golden Eagles take to the road this weekend to open Sun Belt play at Arkansas State. The series begins with a 6 p.m. contest on Friday.
