Women’s Tennis Falls at Troy

TROY, Ala. – Southern Miss (7-7, 1-2 SBC) dropped a 4-1 decision to Troy (9-6, 4-1 SBC) on Saturday morning at the Lunsford Tennis Complex. Miranda Xu picked up the Golden Eagles' lone point with a straight-set win at No. 4 singles. Troy's win moved the Trojans to 4-1 in Sun Belt play, while Southern Miss entered the day at 7-6 overall and 1-1 in league action.
Troy grabbed the doubles point with wins on courts one and three. Valeriia Avdeeva and Maria Guirguis defeated Angelina Blinova and Sakura Sudo, 6-4, at No. 1 doubles, while Veena Nazar and Alexia Zarate posted a 7-5 win over Mia Hisashi-Morrissey and Kamornwan Kornsila on court three. The No. 2 doubles match between Hannah Chambers and Xu and Troy's Hiba Heni and Leena Metwally was left unfinished at 5-5.
The Trojans added singles wins on courts one and two before Xu answered for Southern Miss. Maria Guirguis earned a 6-3, 6-3 win over Blinova at No. 1, and Avdeeva followed with a 6-4, 6-3 victory against Sudo on court two. Xu then got the Golden Eagles on the board with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Heni at No. 4 singles.
Troy secured the match on court six, where Nazar outlasted Manuella Persson, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4), for the clinching point. Southern Miss also had two matches left unfinished. Chambers was trailing Metwally, 7-6 (7-4), 4-3, at No. 3 singles, while Kornsila had taken the opening set from Zarate in a tiebreak before play was stopped on court five.
Southern Miss returns home on Tuesday, April 1, to host New Orleans.
