HATTIESBURG, Miss. — App State used a pair of three-run innings to hand No. 11 Southern Miss a 6–2 setback Saturday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field to even its Sun Belt Conference series.
The Golden Eagles (20-7 overall, 4-4 Sun Belt) struck first in the bottom of the opening inning, loading the bases with three walks before Matthew Russo dropped an RBI single in to left to score Joey Urban. The Golden Eagles threatened for more, but App State starter Gage Peterson limited the damage to one run despite throwing 43-first inning pitches. Peterson finished his outing with 4 2/3 innings of work, allowing a lone run on three hits with five walks and seven strikeouts.
App State (13-12, 3-5) answered in the sixth inning with three runs to seize control. Riley Luft led off with a single, followed by Ethan Puig's infield hit. Jalen Seward then laced an RBI double to left field to tie the game before Jake Mummau doubled down the right-field line to bring home two more runs.
Southern Miss added a run in the bottom of the fourth to pull within 4–2. Urban drew his second walk of the game and later scored when Davis Gillespie singled up the middle to extend his hitting streak to six games.
App State pushed across three more runs in the seventh inning. Steven Smith scored on Puig's sacrifice fly before Miller delivered an RBI single through the left side to cap the scoring and give the Mountaineers a 6–2 cushion.
The Golden Eagles threatened in spots but were unable to mount a sustained rally against the App State bullpen. Southern Miss finished with six hits while leaving 11 on base.
Jake Beaty worked a third of a scoreless inning in relief of Peterson and earned the victory to improve to 1-0. Kros Sivley (3-1) took the loss for Southern Miss after allowing four runs in a third of an inning.
