HATTIESBURG, Miss. –  The Southern Miss baseball team returns home this weekend to face Sun Belt Conference foe App State in a three-game series at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field. Game time is set for 6 p.m., for Friday's opener.
All three games can be seen via ESPN+ as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network and through SouthernMiss.com. It will also be Military Appreciation Day for Saturday's contest, and the team will wear special Camp Shelby-inspired uniforms.
The No. 11 ranked Golden Eagles (19-6 overall, 3-3 Sun Belt) lead the series 5-1 which started at the 2023 Sun Belt Conference Tournament. This will be the first time the Mountaineers (12-11, 2-4) will come to Hattiesburg to play Southern Miss. Last season, the Golden Eagles swept App State in Boone, N.C.
Heading into the third weekend of the league series, the Golden Eagles sit in a six-way tie for fourth place in the Sun Belt standings. Southern Miss trails leader Coastal Carolina (6-0), Marshall (5-1) and ULM (4-2), while they are currently tied with Arkansas State, South Alabama, Texas State, James Madison and Troy.
Southern Miss looks to rebound from a 12-0, seven-inning defeat at No. 6 Mississippi State Tuesday night after taking two of three from league foe Troy last weekend.
Although senior Kyle Morrison had his team-best 11-game hitting streak snapped at MSU Tuesday night, he continues to lead the team in hitting with a .337 batting average to go along with team bests of eight home runs and 24 RBI. Fellow senior, Joey Urban, ranks second on the offensive side with a .326 batting clip with seven homers and 23 RBI, while Davis Gillespie is third at .319 with six homers and 19 RBI. Seth Smith added a .304 hitting mark for the club with a homer and 13 RBI.
On the mound this weekend, the Golden Eagles will use a different starting rotation than the two previous three-game sets. Sophomore left-hander Grayden Harris (4-1, 3.34 ERA) will collect his second consecutive Friday night start, while sophomore right-hander Camden Sunstrom (2-1, 2.22 ERA) take the mound to open a game for the second time this season and the first during a weekend series. Southern Miss is undecided on a Sunday starter at this time.
Following the App State series, the Golden Eagles complete a four-game homestand when they entertain Southeastern Louisiana, Tuesday, March 31, at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field. Game time for that contest is 6 p.m.
