DELAND, Fla. – Southern Miss beach volleyball (3-11, 0-0 Sun Belt) opened its first day at the Stetson Spring Invitational with losses to UAB (8-6) and No. 15 Stetson (13-5) at the Cooper Beach Volleyball Complex.

UAB 4, Southern Miss 1
Southern Miss opened the day with a 4-1 defeat to UAB. The Blazers took the first two points of the dual at the first and fifth pairing before Zuzanna Michalska (Warsaw, Poland) and Abby Lewis (The Woodlands, Texas) took Southern Miss' first point with a two-set win at the second flight.

UAB eked out a close two-set win at the threes to take the overall dual. Y-Nhu Do (Cary, N.C.) and Iustina Corcoz (Bucharest, Romania) nearly took Southern Miss' second point, but fell 15-12 in the third set.

No. 15 Stetson 3, Southern Miss 2
The Golden Eagles played their second dual of the day against the 15th-ranked host Stetson Hatters. Southern Miss pushed the Hatters to the brink after the hosts took the first two pairings of the dual. Do/Corcoz fell in two close sets for the Hatters to clinch the dual.

Ryann Thomas (Georgetown, Ky.) and Giovanna Gurgel Bahia (Recife, Brazil) took a three-set thriller in the fives to get Southern Miss on the board. Laurel Dennis (Gulfport, Miss.) and Sadie McAda (Pleasanton, Texas) closed out a 15-12 third set to come from behind and defeat the Hatters' top flight, moving to 8-6 on the year as Southern Miss top pairing.
