RUSTON, La. – Joey Urban homered and drove in three runs, while three Golden Eagle relievers combined to throw six shutout innings as Southern Miss completed a three-game sweep of Louisiana Tech here Sunday afternoon at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park with a 6-2 victory. The win also gave Golden Eagle head coach Christian Ostrander his 100th victory at the school.
Southern Miss (10-1) won for the 10th-straight time, collecting their first sweep over the Bulldogs (8-4) since 2019 which also came here in Ruston.
Ostrander reached 100 victories in 137 games, quicker than any previous Golden Eagle head coach including Pete Taylor (163), Scott Berry (165), Corky Palmer (168) and Hill Denson (230).
"I am so thankful to be in this position as there is no where else that I want to be," said Ostrander. "I am very honored to lead this program. One-hundred wins is a byproduct of the players and (assistant) coaches and support staff. We have a great staff, who are great people across the board. It's a collective effort and I am very humbled to be able to do what we are doing in leading this program."
Urban bookended his RBI with one in the first and two more in the ninth, while Camden Sunstrom, Kros Sivley and Camden Clark allowed five hits and punched out six with only one walk.
The Golden Eagles jumped out early with a solo run in the opening inning. Ben Higdon led off the game with a double to right, before Urban followed with a single up the middle, driving in the first run.
Trey Hawsey, though, hit two home runs – one in the bottom of the first and one in the third – to give the Bulldogs the early advantage as he upped his homer total to three.
Southern Miss then retook the lead for good in the fourth. After a Drey Barrett lead off single, Kyle Morrison walked. A sacrifice bunt by Caleb Stelly moved both runners up a base before, Seth Smith's hard grounder to first kicked off the first baseman's glove to score both runners on the play.
Matthew Russo then added to the Golden Eagles lead with a solo homer to right center in the fifth. It was his second blast of the year.
The Golden Eagles did not get on the board again until the ninth when Higdon singled with one out before Urban blasted his fourth homer of the year to left to complete the scoring.
Sunstrom scattered four hits over three innings and fanned four to get the win and improve to 1-0. After Sivley threw a scoreless frame, Clark threw two scoreless frames to earn his third save.
The Golden Eagles now return home for a pair of midweek contests, including nationally ranked Mississippi State, Tuesday, March 3, and Nicholls, Wednesday, March 4. Both games are slated to start at 6 p.m.
