HATTIESBURG, Miss. – After registering a three-game sweep at Louisiana Tech over the weekend, Southern Miss returns home for the first of a five-game homestand beginning Tuesday with in-state foe Mississippi State.
The Golden Eagles (10-1) bring a 10-game winning streak into the contest, while the Bulldogs (11-1) lost for the first time Sunday in extra innings to top-ranked UCLA, 7-6.
The Bulldogs, ranked as high as No. 3 in the five major polls, are off to an excellent start under first-year coach Brian O'Connor. The Golden Eagles hold a spot as high as No. 8 in the rankings and are led by third-year coach Christian Ostrander, who registered his 100th victory as the Golden Eagle skipper Sunday. He did that faster than any previous Southern Miss baseball coach.
The game marks the first time since the 2023 NCAA Super Regional - the Golden Eagles played host to Tennessee - which will pit a pair of teams ranked Top 10 nationally. Southern Miss was No. 9 and Tennessee No. 8 in the Collegiate Baseball Poll (a publication which is no longer in print), while the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association poll had the Volunteers, No. 6, and the Golden Eagles, No. 10.
Kyle Morrison, who hit a grand slam versus Alabama and a three-run shot at Louisiana Tech last week, currently has the team's top hitting streak at seven games. Joey Urban, who had hits in all four games last week for the Golden Eagles, leads the squad in average at .463. Urban also holds the team lead in home runs (four) and RBI (16).
Seth Smith, who has started in six games, is hitting .478, while Davis Gillespie is hitting at a .405 clip. Morrison is next at .324.
The two schools split a pair of games last season as the Golden Eagles won 3-0 in Hattiesburg, while the Bulldogs captured an 18-3 decision in seven innings in Starkville. It was the first year the two programs played each other on a home campus site since the two schools played three-game series at each other's home parks during the 2018 and 2019 campaigns.
Freshman Dylan Causey (0-0, 0.00 ERA) makes his second career start against the Bulldogs. He started last Tuesday against Alabama, throwing an inning in that outing. MSU will counter with senior right-hander Brendan Sweeney (0-0, 1.23 ERA).
The game will be shown via ESPN+ and can also be heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network.
The Golden Eagles return to action with Nicholls, Wednesday, with a 6 p.m. contest at Pete Taylor Park.
