RUSTON, La. – Tucker Stockman had two hits and drove in four runs while Grayden Harris threw six shutout innings as Southern Miss defeated Louisiana Tech 11-0 Saturday evening at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park in a seven-inning, run-rule victory.
The Golden Eagles (9-1) won for the ninth consecutive time, handing the Bulldogs (8-3) their first home run-rule non-conference loss since they dropped a 20-3 decision to McNeese on March 5, 2014.
After keeping the Golden Eagles in check for three innings, LA Tech starter Hudson Rowan was chased in the fourth as he allowed three base hits and a pair of walks. The Golden Eagles scored the game's first run on a Stockman sacrifice fly before Kyle Morrison scored via a bases loaded walk to Ben Higdon.
The walk to Higdon ended Rowan's day as he ended up allowing five runs on five hits with four walks and three strikeouts to suffer the loss and fall to 2-1.
Southern Miss then added another run on a Joey Urban bases loaded RBI walk before Matthew Russo plated two more runs with a single through the right side. The final tally of the frame came on a walk whose final pitch got by the Bulldog catcher that allowed Urban to score on a wild pitch.
That was all that Harris needed as he limited the Bulldogs to three hits over six innings with three walks and five strikeouts to earn the victory and improve to 2-0 on the year. Drake Meeks, who missed last season with an injury, made his debut in the seventh and retired all three batters he faced which included a strikeout. It was the Golden Eagles' first combined shutout since May 3, 2005, against Arkansas State.
Stockman increased the lead to 8-0 in the fifth with a two-run homer down the right field line, his second of the year, and Southern Miss completed its sixth with three more tallies. Drey Barrett knocked in the first run with a run-scoring double, before Morrison added a sacrifice fly and Stockman produced an RBI single to left to complete the scoring.
Southern Miss goes after the three-game sweep as the series concludes Sunday at 1 p.m.
