RUSTON, La. – Joey Urban and Kyle Morrison each homered to lead Southern Miss to an 8-3 road victory at Louisiana Tech Friday evening at J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park.
The Golden Eagles (8-1) won for the eighth consecutive time as they improved their record away from home to 5-0.
Southern Miss wasted little time getting on the board with two runs in the opening frame. After Ben Hidgon opened the game with a single to center, Joey Urban blasted his third homer of the year, a two-run shot to left, to give the visitors a 2-0 advantage.
Golden Eagle starting pitcher Colby Allen then gave up a pair of unearned runs in the second as the Bulldogs (8-2) leadoff hitter reached base via a Seth Smith fielding error at short. After a pair of outs, Casey McCoy homered to left, his second to tie the score.
The Bulldogs then took their only lead one inning later. Corey Lunsford opened the inning with a double and scored three batters later with a run-scoring single by Cade Patterson. After that single, Allen did not allow another base runner until two outs in the fifth, on a walk, which proved to be his last batter of the game.
Allen, who did not figure in the decision, went 4 2/3 innings and allowed three runs (one earned) on two walks and five strikeouts.
Southern Miss then went to the bullpen for Kros Sivley and then Josh Och down the stretch and the duo combined to allow just one Bulldog reach base on a single in the sixth. After Sivley got a strikeout to get out of the fifth, his outing lasted 1 2/3 innings to get the victory and improve to 2-0 as he fanned two and allowed just one hit.
Och finished for the Golden Eagles, earning his first save by retiring all eight batters he faced, which included five-straight strikeouts to end the contest.
The Golden Eagles took the lead for good in the fourth. Davis Gillespie, who had three of his team's 10 hits, opened the frame with a double. After a Drey Barrett single which put runners on the corners, Morrison blasted his third homer of the year to right center to give the Golden Eagles a 5-3 lead.
Bulldog starter Declan Dahl (2-1) allowed five runs on six hits with no walks and nine strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings to suffer the loss.
Southern Miss then added to its final advantage with three more runs in the eighth. Urban opened the frame with a double. After a groundout to move him to third, Gillespie singled in Urban. Smith followed later with a two-run single to center to finish the scoring.
The two teams continue the series with a 4 p.m., Saturday contest.
