Beach Volleyball Heads to Bayou State for Tiger Beach Challenge

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss (2-2) heads to Baton Rouge, La., for the two-day Tiger Beach Challenge hosted by LSU. Action starts on Friday, Feb. 27, and concludes on Saturday, Feb. 28, with Southern Miss playing two duals each day for a total of four.

The Golden Eagles open their time in the tournament against the host and 12th-ranked Tigers of LSU. LSU opened the season with a perfect 5-0 ledger at the Green Wave Invitational in Elmwood, La., hosted by Tulane at White Sands. The Tigers defeated No. 20 Tulane, South Florida, Oregon, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Spring Hill to secure an undefeated start to head coach Russell Brock's 10th season.
Brock holds a 233-91 overall ledger leading the Tigers since 2017 and has won at least 24 games in every season outside of the COVID-19 affected 2020 campaign. Last season, the Tigers finished 24-13 and finished as semifinalists in the CCSA Tournament before making the NCAA Tournament as the 11th overall seed where they fell to Cal Poly in the first round.
The Tigers are in their first season as members of the upstart Mountain Pacific Sports Federation after previously competing in the CCSA, Southern Miss' home from 2019-21.

Southern Miss' first day comes to a close against North Alabama. The Lions sit at 3-2 on the year after last week's FSU Unconquered Invitational in Tallahassee, Fla. North Alabama is under its fourth season under head coach Kaleb VanDePerre who holds a 62-45 record in Florence.
UNA finished last season 16-15 before falling to Florida Gulf Coast in the ASUN Tournament Finals. Selma Robinson earned a spot on the Atlantic Sun Preseason Team as a unanimous decision.

Saturday's action opens against No. 18 Washington, who sits at 3-1 after a strong showing at the Pepperdine Challenge, defeating Pepperdine twice and Vanguard with the lone loss to No. 10 Long Beach State in a 3-2 final.
The Huskies have a first-year head coach in Steve McFadden, who assumed the head role after three seasons as an assistant beach volleyball coach. Last season, McFadden helped Washington to a 17-18 ledger with a 2-7 record in MPSF play.

The Green Wave the season at their home site in Elmwood, La., at the Green Wave Invitational, falling to No. 12 LSU, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and South Florida with wins over Oregon and New Orleans.
Head coach Eyal Zimat is in his seven season leading Tulane and holds a 128-64 ledger in Uptown with a 142-68 overall career record including one season at San Francisco. Tulane enjoyed its best season in program history last season with a 29-11 campaign that ended in the C-USA Final dual in a 3-1 loss to Florida Atlantic.
