ROUND ROCK, Texas – No. 20 Southern Miss scored in each of the final four innings and got stellar pitching performances from both Grayden Harris and Camden Sunstrom as the Golden Eagles defeated No. 11 Oregon State 9-4 Saturday Night in day two of the Round Rock Classic at Dell Diamond.
The Golden Eagles (5-1) won for the fifth-straight time and defeated the Beavers in their first-ever meeting in baseball. Southern Miss improved to 2-0 in the event and look to go undefeated when they face Baylor in the finale Sunday at 3 p.m.
Joey Urban led the Golden Eagle offense with three hits and four RBI.
The senior from Jupiter, Fla., put Southern Miss up early with an opposite field homer off OSU starter Ethan Kleinschmit in the first. Kleinschmit later gave up a walk and a single to Ben Higdon later in the inning but retired the next 14 hitters.
Harris looked strong, fanning six of the first eight batters he faced. His only blemish came in the fourth, which gave the Beavers their only lead. After an infield error helped OSU get a run to open fourth, Jacob Galloway then added a single, before Jacob Krieg homered to right for his first of the year to give the home squad their only lead of the game 3-1.
Harris allowed just the three runs, two of which were earned, on six hits and a walk with a career-high eight strikeouts to garner the victory and go to 1-0.
The Golden Eagles finally got to Kleinschmit in the sixth. With one out, Urban tripled and then scored on a Matthew Russo single to left. Davis Gillespie then lined one just over the left field wall to give Southern Miss a 4-3 advantage.
Kleinschmit was chased after the home run and ended giving up four runs on five hits with a walk and 10 strikeouts to suffer the loss and fall to 0-1.
Southern Miss then extended the lead with three more runs in the seventh. Following a ground out, Tucker Stockman was hit by a pitch and pinch hitter Seth Smith single, before Caleb Stelly walked to load the bases. Urban then knocked home two runs with a single and Davis Gillespie added a sacrifice fly to make the score 7-3.
After giving up a run on an RBI single by Nayn Hughes in the seventh, Southern Miss added solo tallies in the final two frames – an RBI walk by Urban in the eighth and an RBI single from Kyle Morrison in the ninth – to complete the scoring.
Sunstrom threw the final four innings, recording a career-high strikeouts with no walks on four hits, giving up just a lone unearned run. He retired the final six batters he faced in the contest to earn his first career save.
