Baseball Completes Three-Game Sweep at Round Rock Classic with 5-1 Win over Baylor

ROUND ROCK, Texas – Seth Smith collected three hits and drove in a pair of runs as No. 20 Southern Miss completed a three-game sweep at the Round Rock Classic Sunday with a 5-1 victory over Baylor at Dell Diamond.
The Golden Eagles (6-1) won for the sixth-straight game as the defeated Purdue, No. 11 Oregon State and the Bears in the weekend event.
Southern Miss collected two runs in the second inning to take the lead for good in the game. They registered three walks and a hit by pitch from Bear starter Cade Hansen. the last walk came with the bases loaded to Lawson Odom, who knocked in the game's first run. Smith then added a sacrifice fly to make the score 2-0.
The Bears (4-3) then cut into the led with a run on a bases loaded hit by pitch from Golden Eagle starter McCarty English. The right-handed starter went two-plus innings and allowed a run on no hits with four walks and two strikeouts, not figuring in the decision.
Smith got the Golden Eagle offense going again in the fourth. After his one-out single and a groundout, Joe Urban drove him in with a single.
The Golden Eagles added two more runs in the ninth to put the game out of reach. After a pair of one-out walks, William Tonsmeire hit a ball to Tyce Armstrong at first, who tried to get the runner at second and his throw was wide of the bag and into left field. Smith then completed the visitor's scoring with a run-scoring single up the middle.
Kros Sivley (1-0) threw three innings of relief and surrendered just two hits and fanned three to earn the victory. JW Armistead, the fifth Southern Miss pitcher, got the final two outs to earn his first Golden Eagle career save.
Hansen went four innings for the Bears and gave up three runs on six hits with three walks and three strikeouts to suffer the loss and fall to 0-1.
Matthew Russo collected three of the Golden Eagles' 12 hits, while Barrett added two hits and three walks, while Kyle Morrison got two hits of his own and a pair of walks to help with the Southern Miss offense.
Brayden Buchanan recorded two of Baylor's three hits in the game.
After this four-game road swing, Southern Miss returns home to face Alabama Tuesday night at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
