ROUND ROCK, Texas – Drey Barrett doubled in Davis Gillespie in the bottom of the ninth to lift Southern Miss to a 5-4 victory over Purdue in the opening day of the Round Rock Classic Friday afternoon at Dell Diamond.
The Golden Eagles (4-1) won for the fourth consecutive time as they collected their second walk-off victory of the season and 35th since the start of the 2017 season.
With the score tied at 4-4 in the bottom of the ninth, Davis Gillespie – who collected two of the 10 Golden Eagle hits – walked on five pitches to open the frame. Ben Higdon then put down a perfect sacrifice bunt moving Gillespie to second before Barrett drove Jake Kramer's first pitch to the left center gap, which drove in Gillespie for the game winner.
Purdue (2-3) got to Southern Miss starter Colby Allen in the first inning with a run as leadoff hitter Eli Anderson led off the game with an infield single. He then reached third by advancing on a wild pitch and subsequent throwing error by Tucker Stockman on the play, but Westin Boyle added an RBI single.
Allen kept the Boilermakers at bay for the rest of his start, allowing the lone unearned run on five hits and two walks with strikeouts.
Down 1-0, the Golden Eagles took their first lead by exploding with a four-run fourth. Barrett led off the inning with a walk. After a single by Kyle Morrison, one of two by the second baseman in the contest, both runners moved up a base on an errant pickoff play at second moving both runners into scoring position. Stockman then knocked in the tying run with a sacrifice fly, before Seth Smith added a run-scoring double, another sacrifice fly from Joey Urban and a RBI double from Matthew Russo.
The game remained that way until the eighth when Purdue tallied three runs to tie the score. Trey Swiderski blasted a one-out shot to left for his first homer of the season to cut into the deficit before Boyle notched a two-run single to tie the score.
Southern Miss pitching did work out of bases loaded jams with no outs in both the sixth and ninth innings without giving up a run.
Camden Clark threw the final 1 1/3 innings to get the win and improve to 2-0 as he allowed no runs on three hits with a walk and one strikeout.
Kramer suffered the loss by giving up the one run on a hit with a walk over the final 2/3 innings.
The Golden Eagles continue the tournament when they meet nationally ranked Oregon State Saturday at 5 p.m.
