Golden Eagles Finish Runner-Up at Great River Cup

GULFPORT, Miss. -- The Southern Miss women's golf team finished in second place at the Great River Cup after losing 3-2 to ULM in the championship match at Windance Country Club. Junior Liv Romer went 3-0 on the week, while three other Golden Eagles went 2-1.Â
Romer had a strong showing as she wrapped up her win with three holes to play, while up five against Tessa Ion. Romer posted one birdie on the day and only recorded a pair of bogeys. The Golden Eagles got another win from Taylor Trible, who won 1 Up against Anna Andrysova. The senior took an early lead after she birdied hole five, though she bogeyed the next hole to get back to even. She later birdied the final hole of the match to secure a point for Southern Miss.Â
Louise Cuyvers fell 3&2 at the top spot as Daniella Campillo Martinez clinched the win with two holes to play. Martinez had quick success as she eagled the third hole and then birdied three more late in the round. Meanwhile, Cuyvers had a birdie on hole 15, but Martinez won the next hole to win the match. Savannah Van Gaalen went the distance with a chance to tie the match on the final hole, but both golfers shot even-par, with Emma Lucrezia Meznini icing the one-point win. Johanna Sjursen picked up another win for the Warhawks, defeating Fernanda Gorostiaga, 2 Up. Gorostiaga briefly tied the match midway through the round with a birdie on the 10th hole, but Sjursen took a late lead with less than five holes to play.Â
Alma Betoret cruised to an 8&7 win over Arkansas State's Mackenzie Cloutier in an individual match. Betoret earned wins on three holes with birdies, while Cloutier gave her two more points with a pair of bogeys. Betoret continued to build her lead and eventually won with seven holes left to play. Playing ULM's Isabel Mas Pitarch in an individual match, Morgan Guepet ended her tournament with a tie.Â
