HAMMOND, La. – Joey Urban and Matthew Russo collected back-to-back run-scoring singles in the top of the ninth to lift No. 20 Southern Miss to a 3-1 victory over Southeastern Louisiana in front of 1,533 at Pat Kennelly Stadium at Alumni Field Tuesday night.
The Golden Eagles (3-1) won for the third-straight game as they next head to the Round Rock Classic this weekend in Round Rock, Texas, where they will play Purdue (2 p.m. Friday), Oregon State (5 p.m. Saturday) and Baylor (3 p.m. Sunday).
With the score tied at 1-1 heading into the top of the ninth, pinch hitter Seth Smith singled to right with two outs. After a walk to Kyle Morrison, Urban singled to left to score Smith and give the Golden Eagles the lead. It was the fifth time Urban had reached base in the contest, after collecting three walks and a single earlier in the affair.
Russo then singled to right center, which scored Morrison for the two-run cushion.
Camden Clark, the eighth Southern Miss pitcher, then needed seven pitches to record three quick outs in the bottom of the inning to earn his second save of the year.
Nick Gisclair, the seventh of eight Lion pitchers, gave up two runs on three hits with two walks and a strikeout over two-thirds of an inning to suffer the loss and fall to 0-1.
Pitching ruled the day until the seventh as a combination of eight Golden Eagle and Lion pitchers continued to stack up scoreless innings.
Davis Gillespie the opened the top half of that inning with a solo home run to left center for the first of the year off Triston Todorowski, to give the Golden Eagles their first lead.
SLU evened the score in the eighth as Justin Williams tripled to open the frame off Kros Sivley. Josh Och then came in and allowed a sacrifice fly to pinch hitter Brooks Wright, tying the score at 1-1.
Och went on to get the win and improve to 2-0 as he allowed a hit and fanned one over an inning to get the win.
Southern Miss starter Camden Sunstrom tossed three scoreless frames and allowed a hit with a career-high five strikeouts.
The Golden Eagle pitching staff ended with 12 strikeouts and just one walk in the contest.
