Women's Golf Advances to Great River Championship After Beating Arkansas State and Central Arkansas

GULFPORT -- The Southern Miss women's golf team cruised to two wins over Arkansas State and Central Arkansas on Monday at the Great River Cup. The Golden Eagles now advance to play ULM in the match play championship at Windance Country Club.Â
Southern Miss 4, Arkansas State 1
Southern Miss got off to a quick start as Fernanda Gorostiaga won 6&5 for the Golden Eagles, recording three birdies in a four-hole stretch. The senior first birdied the ninth hole of the round, then made the turn to the front nine and birdied holes two and three. Savannah Van Gaalen secured her win after paring the eighth hole at Windance Country Club. Van Gaalen went for three birdies during her round, including back-to-back birdies on holes 15 and 16.Â
Liv Romer added another point for Southern Miss after winning 4&3. Romer had a birdie on hole 18 and then added a final birdie on the third hole, which she made after making the turn one-under par and four up. Over the final seven holes, Romer played even-par golf as her opponent had a double bogey and two bogeys. Louise Cuyvers went the distance as she birdied hole 11 for the win. On the day, Cuyvers led the Golden Eagles with five birdies, including three-straight starting at hole 14. Taylor Trible dropped a close match to Morgan Beaulieu, who got the lone Arkansas State point. Moragn Guepet dropped her individual match 2&1. Alma Betoret also lost her individual match.Â

Cuyvers wrapped up the first point for Southern Miss as she dominated her way to a 7&6 win. Cuyvers took an early lead thanks to five birdies over the round, including three in a four-hole stretch. She had five birdies over eight holes as she clinched the match on the sixth hole. Romer picked up her second win of the day as she won 2&1. Romer had a pair of birdies during her second round. Trible squeaked out a one-point win after she shot even-par on the final hole, as she had a birdie on the hole before to take the lead. Trible added five birdies and had three in a five-hole stretch.Â
Central Arkansas earned half a point after Gorostiaga and Gudrun Thorsteinsdottir tied their match. Gorostiaga had five birdies during her round, while her opponent recorded a pair of birdies. The Sugar Bears got a point after Alethea Paige Gaccion beat Van Gaalen, 1 Up. Van Gaalen had two birdies but had a handful of bogeys that put Gaccion ahead.Â
