Baseball Opens Four-Game Road Swing at Southeastern Louisiana

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – After winning its season-opening series over UC Santa Barbara, the Southern Miss baseball team takes to the road for the first of a four-game road swing with a Tuesday contest at Southeastern Louisiana. Game time is set for 6 p.m. at Pat Kennelly Stadium at Alumni Field.
The game can be seen via ESPN+ as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network.
Southern Miss (2-1) enters it first road contest of the season after winning its final two games over the Gauchos. A two-run homer by Joey Urban in the eighth lifted the Golden Eagles on Saturday, while Matthew Russo's bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth helped Southern Miss capture the series.
The Lions (0-3) were swept at home by Kent State during its first series of the year, including a 14-7 setback in the finale.
The two programs meet for the first of two games this season as the schools also have now met every year since 2021. The other matchup takes place in Hattiesburg on March 31.
Southern Miss enters the game having won the last three meetings over the Lions, including a pair of thrilling victories last season. Former Golden Eagle Nick Monistere blasted a ninth-inning grand slam in Hammond to provide an 8-7 victory for the visitors, belting a game-winning homer at the bottom of the ninth a week later at The Pete.
During the opening series, Joe Urban led the way for the Golden Eagles offensively, hitting .455 during the opening series while Drey Barrett added a .417 batting clip. Russo drove in a team-best four runs, while Southern Miss – which hit a school record 106 home runs a year ago – collected six round-trippers in the first three games.
Golden Eagle right-handed sophomore Camden Sunstrom (0-0, 6.75) will start on the mound for Southern Miss. He will face Lion sophomore left-hander Nik Toups (0-0, 18.00 ERA).
Following the SLU game, Southern Miss heads to the Round Rock Classic in Texas, where they will play Purdue (Friday, 2 p.m.), Oregon State (Saturday, 5 p.m.) and Baylor (Sunday, 3 p.m.).
