Only four teams have officially secured places in the eight-team Sun Belt Championship field entering the final day of the regular season. Louisiana and South Alabama sit on 14 points, Marshall enters with 12, while Southern Miss, Troy and Georgia Southern are tied with 11. Those six programs are competing for the remaining four spots, and none will face another member of that group Sunday, leaving results from across the league in play throughout the afternoon.
Southern Miss kept itself in the race with a 1-1 draw against Georgia Southern last Sunday. Shaelynn Quick scored her fifth goal of the season off a Vail Wartes assist, while Logan McGruder turned away nine shots in goal. Quick has moved within one goal of Ava Bynes for the team lead, with Bynes entering the finale at six goals and a team-best 14 points. Lorilee Taylor leads the Golden Eagles with four assists.
Sunday also gives Coach Danny Owens' group an opportunity to put its name on several new marks during its first season under his direction. Southern Miss' 11 conference points already match its 2024 total and sit one shy of the program's Sun Belt-era high of 12 set in 2023. The Golden Eagles have also matched their Sun Belt high with three conference victories. A draw Sunday would tie the program's conference-points high, while a victory would establish new Sun Belt-era marks with 14 points and four league wins. Seven overall victories would also be the most Southern Miss has recorded in a season since joining the conference in 2022.
The trip to Monroe brings another piece of history with it. Southern Miss and ULM have split the all-time series at 5-5-1, but the Golden Eagles are still searching for their first win over the Warhawks as Sun Belt opponents. ULM owns a 3-0-1 advantage in the four meetings since Southern Miss joined the league, including a 3-0 decision in Monroe in 2024 and a 3-1 result in Hattiesburg last season. Southern Miss' last victory in the series came in 2018, while its last win at ULM was a 3-1 result in 2017.
ULM returns home after a 2-1 loss at South Alabama, but the Warhawks have shown the ability to cause problems late in conference play. ULM defeated Georgia State 2-1 earlier this month, earned a 1-1 road draw at Troy and followed with a 3-1 home victory over Louisiana. Ines de Lope Casanova leads the Warhawks with six goals and 14 points, while Amy Sharkey has scored four times and Charli Harris has contributed three goals and three assists.
The numbers leave little separation between the two sides offensively. Southern Miss and ULM have each scored 26 goals this season, while both have allowed 27. For the Golden Eagles, though, Sunday's meaning goes well beyond the season totals. One final regular-season result could reshape both the program's Sun Belt record book and its place in the postseason field.
The rest of the tournament race will unfold alongside the match in Monroe. Troy travels to App State, Marshall visits Coastal Carolina and Georgia Southern hosts league-leading James Madison, while Louisiana and South Alabama close against Arkansas State and Louisiana Tech, respectively. The Sun Belt will announce the final eight-team bracket following the conclusion of Sunday's matches.
