The two teams currently occupy the final two positions in the eight-team tournament field, with Coastal Carolina, Troy and South Alabama just two points behind. Sunday's winner would move to 13 points and create separation from a direct postseason contender. Southern Miss has two regular-season matches remaining, while Georgia Southern has three. The Sun Belt Championship takes place Nov. 9-14 in Foley, Ala.
A victory would also give Southern Miss its most Sun Belt wins in a season since joining the conference in 2022. Coach Danny Owens' team has already matched the program's previous high of three, set in 2023, and enters Sunday seeking its first win against Georgia Southern.
The Golden Eagles return to Hattiesburg following a 3-1 loss at App State on Wednesday. Ava Bynes gave Southern Miss an early lead off an Olivia Tribolet assist before the Mountaineers drew level late in the first half and scored twice after the break.
Bynes has scored in consecutive matches, following her game-winning goal at South Alabama with her team-leading sixth goal Wednesday. She leads Southern Miss with 14 points and two game-winning goals, providing a timely lift to the attack as the regular season winds down.
Logan McGruder has started all 15 matches in goal and recorded 68 saves. The Golden Eagles have posted four team shutouts, including 1-0 road wins at Arkansas State and South Alabama that account for six of their 10 conference points.
Georgia Southern arrives following a 2-1 home victory over Troy on Thursday. Kendall Wilson and Kaitlin Cook scored as the Eagles ended a two-match losing streak and pulled even with Southern Miss in the standings.
Addison Comer leads Georgia Southern with 15 points on four goals and seven assists. Cook, Wilson and Sophia Braziunas have also scored four times, giving the Eagles several scoring options. Quinn Wilson has handled most of the work in goal, recording 61 saves and a 1.26 goals-against average.
Sunday marks the third meeting between the programs and Georgia Southern's second visit to Hattiesburg. The Eagles won the first meeting 2-1 on Oct. 15, 2023, before the teams played to a 2-2 draw in Statesboro on Oct. 27, 2024.
