ATLANTA – Southern Miss women's soccer (1-6-1, 0-1-0 SBC) opened Sun Belt Conference play on Sunday afternoon, battling throughout but ultimately falling to Georgia State (5-3-1, 1-0-0 SBC) at the GSU Soccer Complex.
The Panthers struck first in the 22nd minute through Hina Suzuki and doubled the lead just three minutes later with a finish from Emily Glenn. The Golden Eagles responded before the break, as Paula Castro Garcia netted her first career goal in the 44th minute, finishing off an assist from Zayla Reagan to cut the deficit in half.
In the second half, Georgia State regained momentum with a 50th-minute strike from Aaliyah Faddoul. Southern Miss again answered, this time from the penalty spot. Raquelle Mitchell calmly converted in the 62nd minute, securing her first goal of the year and pulling the Golden Eagles back within one.
Despite strong defensive work and several key saves from goalkeeper Maddie Ellis, who finished with seven stops on the day, Georgia State added a late insurance goal in the 84th minute. The Golden Eagles showed grit and created second-half chances, including a pair of on-target efforts from Taylor Stewart, but could not find a third breakthrough.
Southern Miss ended the match with five total shots, four on target, and a 7-save performance between the posts. The Golden Eagles also displayed resilience while playing shorthanded following a 75th-minute red card.
The contest highlighted the team's continued growth, with two different goal scorers finding the net and multiple young players stepping into key roles during the program's first Sun Belt action of the season.
