Baseball Falls in NCAA Hattiesburg Regional Opener 11-4 to Columbia

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Ivy League champion Columbia got eight hits, and seven runs batted in from its top four batters in its order to knock off No. 16 national seed Southern Miss Friday night in the NCAA Hattiesburg Regional Opener at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The Golden Eagles (44-15) were limited to five hits including two each from Jake Cook and Joey Urban as they lost their regional opener for the third-straight opener.
Lion leadoff hitter Hunter Snyder got four hits and drove in a run, while two-hole batter Sam Miller added two hits and two RBI. Three-hole hitter Griffin Palfrey added a run and an RBI, while cleanup batter Anton Lazits registered a homer with three RBI.
Columbia (30-17) scored in five different innings and got home runs from Owen Eastabrook and Lazits late in the contest. Eastabrook belted a two-run blast in the eighth for his ninth of the season, while Lazits opened the ninth with a solo shot for his 13th to pull away from the Golden Eagles.
The Golden Eagles fell behind 2-1 early and the Lions pulled away with a four-run fourth. The Golden Eagles got two runs back in the bottom of the frame with a run on a wild pitch and as they drew four walks in the inning but left the bases loaded.
Southern Miss managed one more run in the eighth as Urban, who had two doubles, connected on his second two-base hit and then scored on a dropped fly ball to left.
Alex Sotiropoulos, who threw 3 2/3 innings in relief of starter Jagger Edwards, blanked Southern Miss giving up one hit and three walks with four strikeouts to improve to 5-2.
Golden Eagle starter Matt Adams (6-3) got tagged for four runs on five hits with a walk and three strikeouts to suffer the loss and fall for the first time in five decisions.
Southern Miss will now face No. 2 seed Alabama (41-17) who lost 5-3 to Miami earlier in the day at 2 p.m. The Hurricanes and Columbia will play at 8 p.m.
