HATTIESBURG Miss. – Tucker Stockman's sinking liner to center field drove in a pair of eighth inning runs to lead Southern Miss to a 6-5 come-from-behind NCAA Hattiesburg Regional victory over Alabama Saturday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The Golden Eagles (45-15) rallied with three runs in that fateful frame, after falling behind 5-3 in the contest.
Nick Monistere, who belted two home runs and drove in the three, collected his second of the game off the billboard in left cut the gap to one run to open the eighth. Alabama then went to the bullpen for Carson Ozmer, the nation's save leader, who immediately hit Matthew Russo to begin his relief outing. After a walk to Joey Urban, Ben Higdon bunted into a fielder's choice out.
After another groundout to put runners at second and third, Carson Paetow was intentionally walked to load the bases. Stockman, who was hitting ninth in the order, then lined a 1-2 pitch from Ozmer that landed in front of the center fielder for a single, scoring Urban and Higdon on the play to give the Golden Eagles the lead.
Colby Allen, who entered the game to start the eighth for starter JB Middleton, worked around a leadoff double and an intentional walk in the eighth with a strikeout and a ground-ball double play.
In the ninth, he got a first pitch groundout to open the final inning. After allowing a walk and a single, he fanned Crimson Tide star Justin Lebron, before walking another batter to lead the bases. He then got Richie Bonomolo, Jr. to ground into a force play at third to end the contest.
JB Middleton pitched seven innings and allowed five runs on seven hits with a walk and eight strikeouts but did not figure in the decision. Middleton gave up a solo homer to Will Plattner in the third, his first, a two-run shot to Will Hodo in the fourth, his 15th, and a two-run blast to Bryce Fowler in the seventh, his seventh. Those three homers accounted for all five Alabama runs.
Monistere initially gave the Golden Eagles their first lead with a two-run shot in the third to right-center. The Golden Eagles then tied the score at 3-3 in the fourth with a solo round-tripper from Higdon to straightaway center for his sixth of the year.
Allen did not allow a run over his two innings with two hits and three walks with two strikeouts to garner the victory and improve to 7-4. Ozmer suffered the loss to fall to 4-2.
Alabama saw its season end as they completed the campaign with a 41-18 record.
The Golden Eagles return to action Sunday when they take on the loser of Columbia-Miami later Saturday. The game time is set for 2 p.m.
