MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Joey Urban drove in two runs in the first with a double, while Kros Sivley and Colby Allen kept Troy scoreless over the final 5 2/3 innings to lead No. 12 Southern Miss over the Trojans 2-1 Saturday morning to advance to the Sun Belt Conference Tournament championship game.
The Golden Eagles (44-13) kept their school-record winning streak alive at 18 games as they advance to Sunday's 1 p.m. title game against either Coastal Carolina or Marshall, who play later Saturday. The Thundering Herd must beat the Chanticleers twice to advance in the tournament.
All the game's runs were scored in the opening inning.
After Southern Miss starter Grayden Harris opened the game with a strikeout, Steven Meier singled and went to second on a walk to Brooks Bryan. After another strikeout, Sean Darnell doubled down the right field line to score Meier, before Harris got out of the frame with another strikeout.
Jake Cook opened the bottom of the inning with a walk and then went to second on a Nick Monistere fielder's choice, as the throw to second from third base was late to the bag. After a couple of outs, Urban popped one down the right field line that was overrun by the Trojan right fielder and both runners ended up scoring on the play.
The pitching for both teams then took over the remainder of the contest.
Harris ran into trouble in the fourth for the Golden Eagles after giving a single and a walk and left the game with one out. Sivley entered and then got a ground out to first and a strikeout to end the threat. Harris gave up a run on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts, not figuring in the decision of the game.
Sivley then went 3 2/3 innings and allowed two hits and a walk with a pair of strikeouts to earn the victory and improve to 7-1 on the year.
The final two innings were covered by Allen, who notched his 12th save, as he gave up a ninth-inning single and fanned four. His save total ties for fifth on the school's single season chart along with Landon Harper (2022), Nick Sandlin (2016) and Bradley Roney (2012).
Troy (39-21) got an outstanding performance from starter Chase Nelson, who allowed two runs on four hits with a walk and six strikeouts but suffered the loss and fell to 0-1.
The Trojans outhit the Golden Eagles in the game 9-4, but left 12 runners stranded in the contest.
