Â
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The No. 13 Southern Miss baseball team opens an eight-game road swing this weekend when they play Marshall in a three-game Sun Belt Conference series at Jack Cook Field. The set starts on Friday at 5 p.m. CT.
Â
All three games can be seen via ESPN+, as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network.
Â
The Golden Eagles (21-8 overall, 7-2 Sun Belt) lead the league standings by a game, ahead of Troy, Coastal Carolina and Louisiana, who all sit tied in second at 6-3. The Thundering Herd (14-15, 3-6) rank 12th in the league after taking a game at Troy last weekend.
Â
Southern Miss makes its first trip to West Virginia for baseball since the final weekend of the 2018 regular season, when they swept the Herd in Beckley. The Golden Eagles captured the Conference USA regular season title during that series.
Â
Southern Miss, which has won the last 11 games over the Herd, leads Marshall 43-11 since the two started playing during the 2005 season. That record includes a 14-7 record in the state of West Virginia. The Golden Eagles have also won 15 of 16 three-game series that the two schools have played.
Â
The eight-game road swing for Christian Ostrander's club is the longest since late in the 2012 campaign.
Â
The last time out for Ostrander's team saw his team capture a 13-6 victory over Tulane at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field and included an eight-run first inning by the home team. The Golden Eagles, which tallied 16 hits in the affair, collected five doubles, a triple and three home runs. Southern Miss now has hit a home run in each of its last 16 games.
Â
Both Nick Monistere and Ozzie Pratt drove in five runs each in the contest. Pratt now leads the team in RBI with 30, while Monistere is tied for third on the club at 26.
Â
Following the Marshall series, the Golden Eagles travel to nationally ranked Alabama Tuesday for a 6 p.m. contest.
