BOONE, N.C. – Ozzie Pratt drove in four runs and Matt Adams threw six solid innings as No. 22 Southern Miss defeated App State 7-3 Saturday afternoon at Smith Stadium to capture a Sun Belt Conference series.
The final game of the series is set for Sunday at 11 a.m. CT, as the Golden Eagles go after their first road league sweep since at ULM earlier this season.
The Golden Eagles (30-13 overall, 14-6 Sun Belt) won for the fourth-straight game and registered their 23rd-straight 30-win season in the process, which currently ranks tops in Division I.
Pratt knocked in his four runs on two hits, while Ben Higdon led the way with four of the Golden Eagles 15 hits. Tucker Stockman added three hits, Nick Monistere contributed two hits and two RBI and Braden Luke added two hits and an RBI off the bench.
On the mound, Adams (3-2) limited the Mountaineers (21-21, 11-9) to just four hits and two hit batters with five strikeouts to earn the victory. The only run he allowed was on an RBI single by Kameron Correa for the first run of the game in the third.
Southern Miss, which left at least two base runners stranded on six occasions including the bases loaded three times, finally got on the board with a three-run sixth. Higdon doubled, his second of two in the game, to lead off the frame. Tucker Stockman then registered a single, before Pratt plated the first run with a single of his own. Monistere followed with an RBI fielder's choice and pinch hitter Braden Luke singled to left center driving home the final run of the inning.
Pratt then knocked in his final three runs of the game with an RBI fielder's choice in the seventh and a two-run single in the eighth.
The game's scoring was finished in the ninth on a leadoff solo home run from Nick Monistere, which was his team leading 16th long ball as he has now driven in 27 runs over the last 10 games.
Colby Allen threw the final three innings for the Golden Eagles to earn his eighth save. Allen's only blemish was a two-run homer in the eighth to Juan Correra, which was his 13th of the year. That was the only hit allowed by Allen, who hit a batter and fanned five.
It also marked the 15th career save for Allen who moved into eighth place on the Golden Eagles career chart for that category, moving him ahead Marc Kubicki.
