SAN MARCOS, Texas – JB Middleton threw seven shutout innings while both Nick Monistere and Carson Paetow drove in two runs apiece to lead No. 23 Southern Miss to a 5-2 victory over Texas State in the opening game of a Sun Belt Conference Series Friday night at Bobcat Ballpark.
The Golden Eagles (23-11 overall, 9-4 Sun Belt) snapped a two-game losing streak as they continued their season-long, eight-game road swing. Coupled with a win by Coastal Carolina, the two teams are now tied for first place in the league standings.
Middleton limited the Bobcats (16-17, 6-7) to five hits, while walking three and fanning six to earn the victory and improve to 6-1 on the year. Kros Sivley covered an inning, and Colby Allen came on in the ninth to end the contest.
Monistere set the tone early with a home run to left, his eighth, off Texas State starter Alex Valentin.
Paetow added a two-run double in the third to push the lead to 3-0, before Monistere added a sacrifice fly in the fourth and Tucker Stockman recorded a sacrifice fly of his own in fifth to complete the scoring.
Valentin gave up all five runs on seven hits and two walks with four strikeouts over five innings to suffer the loss and fall to 4-3.
The Bobcats registered both of their runs in the ninth. Texas State opened the ninth with a walk and single off Sivley, before Southern Miss went to the pen for Allen. Allen got a ground ball to the first hitter he faced, but Seth Smith tallied an error at third to load the bases.
Ryne Farber followed with an RBI groundout. Allen then got the next batter to reach on a fielder's choice by throwing out a runner at home. After an RBI single from Alan Shibley, Allen got a strikeout to end the contest.
Joey Urban led the Golden Eagle hit attack with three, while Monistere, Matthew Russo, Ozzie Pratt and Ben Higdon added two hits each.
Game two of the series is set for 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
