
Golden Eagles Travel to West Coast for Two Days of California Action

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss (4-8, 1-1 Sun Belt) beach volleyball travels to Los Angeles, Calif., to kick off two days of matches in the Golden State. The Golden Eagles play Friday at Loyola Marymount's campus before heading south to Long Beach, Calif., for Saturday's Beach Invitational.
Live stats will be provided on both days by LMU and Long Beach State, respectively.

Southern Miss' journey west begins with a meeting against Sun Belt foe Mercer. The Bears are 8-2 overall after a 2-0 performance in the midweek CSUN Invite in Northridge, Calif. Mercer posted wins over CSUN and Cal State Bakersfield in the one-day event. Last weekend, Mercer finished 4-1 in Jacksonville, Fla., falling only to No. 19 North Florida by a 3-2 final.
Bears head coach Josh Marsh is in his sixth season leading the program and owns a 52-100 overall record. Mercer was selected to finish fourth in the Preseason Sun Belt Coaches Poll.
Last season, Mercer finished 17-19 and 2-4 in Sun Belt play. The Bears fell on day two at the Sun Belt Championship in the consolation round.

The Golden Eagles close their day in Los Angeles with an afternoon meeting against one of the best teams in the nation. The Loyola Marymount Lions enter the weekend ranked No. 2 in the most recent AVCA Poll and hold an impressive 9-1 record with their only loss coming to No. 3 UCLA by a 3-2 final.
The Lions were tabbed as the West Coast Conference's preseason favorites, taking six of seven first place votes. Eight Lions earned All-WCC Preseason Team honors: Chloe Hooker, Lisa Luini, Giuliana Poletti, Valma Prihti, Magdalena Rabitsch, Isabelle Reffel, Michelle Shaffer and Abbey Thorup. LMU has taken the first two WCC Pair of the Week honors with Tanon Rosenthal and Poletti earning the mark in week one and Pelloia and Hooker most recently in week two.
LMU head coach John Mayer is in his 10th season in Los Angeles with a 205-101 overall record. Last season, Mayer's Lions posted a 28-14 record and earned the eight-seed in the NCAA Tournament. LMU fell to No. 1 seed Southern California in the quarterfinals to fall out of the postseason.

Southern Miss' going gets no easier on Saturday as the Golden Eagles head to Long Beach City College to take on No. 9 Long Beach State. The Beach enter the weekend with a deceiving 3-3 record but own victories over two ranked teams – No. 9 California and No. 16 Washington – with all three setbacks coming against ranked competition – No. 1 UCLA, No. 6 Cal Poly and No. 3 Southern California.
The Beach return two First Team All-Americans from last season in Malia Gementera and Taylor Hagenah. The duo helped LBSU to a 28-10 overall record last season that saw the Beach advance to the NCAA Tournament before falling in the first round to California. The duo are the most-recent pair to earn BWC Pair of the Week honors.
Beach head coach Mike Campbell is in year 10 leading the Beach, helping LBSU to a 188-102 overall record in his tenure.

The Golden Eagles end their west coast swing against the Vanguard Lions. Vanguard, located in Costa Mesa, Calif., compete as Division I Independents in beach volleyball and sport an 8-3 record ahead of this weekend's competitions.
The Lions finished 4-0 last weekend with wins over Cal State LA twice, Life Pacific and Hope International. Vanguard is led by seventh-year head coach Kristofer Dorn, who is in his seventh overall season as beach volleyball head coach with a 101-73 record. He also sports a 122-110 overall record in eight seasons as men's volleyball head coach with stops at Clarke (2010-13) and Lindenwood (2014-17).
Dorn founded the Lions beach volleyball program ahead of the 2018 season and has led Vanguard ever since. The Lions finished last year 14-16 and 5-5 in GSAC play. The 2025 season is Vanguard's first since joining the NCAA. Last season, VU repeated as the NAIA National Champion for the second consecutive year.
