Women's Tennis Falls Short at Florida A&M

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.-Southern Miss women's tennis (3-3, 0-0 Sun Belt) battled in a tightly contested road match Monday at Florida A&M (1-8, 0-0 SWAC), but fell just short in a 4-3 decision at the Althea Gibson Tennis Complex.
The Golden Eagles continued their strong doubles play, securing the opening point for the fifth time in six matches this season. Miranda Xu and Sakura Sudo dominated on court three with a commanding 6-1 victory. Florida A&M responded with a 6-2 win on court two against Jordan Parker and Talia Wunnenberg, setting up a decisive battle on Court 1. Hannah Chambers and Malannia Vashkevich then delivered a 7-5 victory to clinch the doubles point for Southern Miss.
Southern Miss carried momentum into singles, with Sudo delivering another impressive performance in a 6-1, 6-4 victory on court four. Parker followed suit with a solid 6-3, 6-3 win on court five, extending the Golden Eagles' lead to 3-0.
However, Florida A&M mounted a comeback, stringing together four consecutive singles wins to claim the match. Vashkevich forced a third set but ultimately fell 3-6, 7-5, 1-6 at No. 2. Xu also pushed her opponent to a hard-fought three-setter but was edged out on court three. Chambers battled to secure the clinching point at the top spot but fell in a narrow two-set contest. With the match on the line, Gagana Mohan Kumar fought to extend play at No. 6, but came up just short in a 4-6, 6-4, 3-6 battle.
