Baseball Opens Sun Belt Conference Play with Old Dominion; Weekend Schedule Times Altered

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss baseball team opens its third season of Sun Belt Conference play this weekend when they entertain Old Dominion at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field starting Friday with a 6 p.m., single contest.

Expected inclement weather Saturday has moved that day's starting time back to 7 p.m., while Sunday's contest has been pushed back an hour to 12 noon.

All three games can be seen via ESPN+, as well as heard on an affiliate of the Southern Miss Sports Network.

The Golden Eagles (12-5) bring in a three-game winning streak to the weekend series after defeating UTRGV 3-1 in a non-conference outing Tuesday night.

Southern Miss begins its third season of Sun Belt play this weekend, having posted a 42-18 league record over their first two seasons. Southern Miss is 15-5 in league series over that time with seven sweeps, while not having been swept. Since 1996, Southern Miss posts a 166-84 record in league series that encompasses 86 sweeps, 16 times having been swept and five split series.

Old Dominion started the season at 4-10, which includes a 9-4 loss to Mississippi State in Biloxi on Tuesday. It is the first time the Monarchs have been to Hattiesburg since the 2022 season, when they took two of three from the Golden Eagles at Pete Taylor Park. The two schools played versus each other in their respective first season of the Sun Belt with the Golden Eagles taking two of three games in Norfolk. Southern Miss is 7-4 against ODU in Hattiesburg.

Overall, Southern Miss leads the series 12-5, which dates back to the 2015 campaign, when they first met in the 2015 Conference USA Tournament in Hattiesburg. Southern Miss won 2-0 in 12 innings in that contest.

Over the last four games, sophomore center fielder Jake Cook has gone 11-for-15 (.733) with three doubles, a triple and two RBI with a pair of runs scored. He hit leadoff for the first time in his career Tuesday versus UTRGV and collected a career-best four hits. Cook registered his first career triple and was a home run shy of the cycle in the Sunday finale. He currently leads the team with a .452 batting average. This stretch also has him with a pair of three-hit games.

Following the Old Dominion series, Southern Miss opens a five-game road swing, starting Tuesday with Ole Miss at Trustmark Park in Pearl. The Golden Eagles will be the designated home team in that contest, which starts at 6 p.m.
